Drug Addiction Treatment - What Doesn't Kill you Make You Stronger
Alcohol
and Polydrug Abuse
Unfortunately, it is extremely common for individuals to abuse alcohol and other substances, including both illicit and prescription drugs. In fact, the National Institute on Drug Abuse lists the most commonly abused drugs and the effects associated with each of these when alcohol is also involved. Many people drink while they use drugs, which can create multiple substance use disorders, all of which can require professional treatment.
Comorbidity and Treatment
The NIDA defines comorbidity as "two or more disorders or illnesses occurring in the same person." These can include two types of substance use disorders, one associated with alcohol and another associated with a dangerous drug. Some individuals suffer from more of these disorders in addition to mental illnesses like schizophrenia, depression, PTSD, etc.
Comorbid disorders must be treated simultaneously in order for an individual to safely recover. This is because, if one disorder remains unabated, it could derail the other's recovery process. Therefore, finding a rehab program that can treat both is essential to individuals with comorbid addictions.
Alcohol--and Drug--Rehab
Many rehab facilities offer simultaneous treatment for both alcohol and drug abuse. Even those specifically labeled as alcohol addiction rehab centers often help patients recover from both issues at once, as well as any other co-occurring disorders. However, when choosing a program, it is important to find one that offers this type of care and to make your doctors, nurses, and counselors aware of the fact that you have been abusing one or more drugs in addition in alcohol.
Professional Treatment Works
If your main addiction is associated with alcohol, it can still be beneficial to attend treatment at one of many alcohol addiction rehab centers. However, if you also abuse other substances, you must make sure that the program you choose can offer care for this issue as well, in addition to any other needs you may have.
